DENVER – The organizers behind Denver’s annual Thanksgiving basket giveaway for those in need are holding a news conference Thursday morning to ask for more donations.

They say due to a significantly increased demand for food and a decrease in corporate sponsorships and individual contributions, the Feed-a-Family Thanksgiving Distribution is facing problems it has never seen before.

The tradition started 52 years ago thanks to Denver restauranteur “Daddy” Bruce Randolph. In the years since, between 25,000 to 35,000 people get food on Thanksgiving thanks to the program.

The Epworth Foundation, which is behind the basket giveaway, says it costs more than $200,000 and 90 percent of the funds go toward buying food. The rest goes toward program and event costs.
